In Brief – A Description Of A Phobia – Defined
A phobia is defined as an unnecessary and/or excessive anxiety in a specific situation or in the presence of a specific object. It is estimated that 20% of people can fit this description and if left unchanged this can last their whole life. Hypnotherapy and NLP can help with this often in one session.
Some of the most usual phobias are heights, flying, public speaking, the dark, spiders, snakes, birds, dogs, fear of rejection, claustrophobia, agoraphobia, fear of failing, a fear of illness, of dying and death, germs and of hospitals, fear of needles and fear of the dentist.
Simple phobias are something specific to a object or situation such as a fear of spiders, dogs, bees, heights (falling), flying, injections, germs, vomiting, claustrophobia and a fear of thunderstorms being common simple phobias.

Social phobias are by definition a fear of other people’s opinions and are related confidence issues. They include a fear of taking exams and public speaking, these can then be defined as a fear of failure, of rejection or of disapproval from the other person.
Agoraphobia is literally a fear of everything, it translates from Greek as “fear of the marketplace”. It is often associated with severe and pervasive anxiety as well as panic disorder or panic attacks. A person suffering from agoraphobia will often have either a simple or a social phobia as a root to their problem.
A simple definition of fear is a “response to a situation/object which is disproportionate to the actual threat represented by the situation/object”. When related to phobias would be a feeling of agitation and anxiety caused by the presence or imminence of danger. Another definition in relation to social phobias could be the apprehension of an event which could cause anxiety and agitation. So it can be said that fears and phobias are related but can be treated effectively with hypnotherapy and NLP and often within one session.
With a simple phobia or social phobia we can expect about 1-2 sessions with a 95% chance of success. Both hypnotherapy and NLP are highly effective with phobias as the success rate suggests.
Agoraphobia due to its potential complexity can take anywhere between 2 – 4 sessions and this really is down to identifying the root cause which does typically have a simple or social phobic beginning. Combining hypnotherapy and NLP can be highly effective when working with agoraphobia with positive life changing results can be seen in a relatively short space of time.

Claustrophobia or the fear of enclosed spaces is one of the most common phobias, another way of looking at it may be ‘the fear of not having an easy or accessible escape route’ because for anyone who experiences claustrophobia this is the overwhelming and most predominating feature. A person who suffers from claustrophobia may panic when inside any confined spaces such as in lifts, on the underground, on planes, in crowded rooms, at concerts or middle seats of cinemas or theatres.
As with most phobias we don’t choice to be claustrophobic and there will be a root cause for the claustrophobia and discovering this, addressing the cause and then developing new ways and manners of being in those situations will enable people to move on. Hypnotherapy, NLP and positive psychology are all excellent at addressing phobias and often surprisingly quickly.
Something traumatic happened to the claustrophobic when a child, maybe you saw an adult being scared of an animal or spider and at that young and impressionable age thought ‘that little crawly thing must be so scary because my mum is scared of it’ or maybe being shut in a dark room, trapped during a childhood game or by another child not knowing how it would affect you later on.
Phobias are often, actually usually childhood fears that were never outgrown, we didn’t choice them and they will nearly always have a root cause or a small number of incidents which have imprinted on the memory and carried forward into adulthood. Sometimes people are aware of the reason for their phobia and sometimes not, or the memory has been forgotten an in some cases it can be a little complicated how our unconscious mind has connected things together. Even though rationally it doesn’t make sense to have the fear, there seems to be something else happening, which there is and this will be deeper in the unconscious mind.
“Hi Matthew u helped me in mid July for my claustrophobia I thought I’d let u know how I got on going to the USA. I got on better than usual with the help you gave me. I felt a lot calmer on both the flight and difficult situations; some of the rides (Disney Land Florida) were closed in. Thank you for all your help.”
